Is Shopify The Right Ecommerce Platform For You?
Shopify makes a trade: less control over the plumbing, far less time spent maintaining it. Whether that trade suits you depends on your catalogue.

Platform comparisons usually turn into feature tables that nobody finishes reading. The useful question is narrower: what does this platform decide for you, and can you live with those decisions? Shopify decides quite a lot. That is the product.
What Shopify handles so you do not
- Hosting, scaling and security patching. There is no server to maintain and no plugin update that can break checkout on a weekend.
- Checkout. It is the highest converting part of the platform and it is maintained by Shopify, which is why they guard it.
- PCI compliance and payment infrastructure, including the regional methods Gulf customers expect.
- A large app market, which covers most needs that are common across many stores.
What it decides for you
The product model is fixed: products, variants and metafields. If your catalogue thinks in configurations, made to measure inputs or bundles that are not simply groups of products, you will be modelling around the platform rather than with it. Options per product are limited. Checkout is customisable on Plus through extensions and Functions, not by editing a template. And the URL structure for products and collections is fixed, which matters on a migration.
Who it fits
Brands selling a catalogue of physical products who would rather spend their engineering budget on the storefront than on the plumbing. That is most DTC. It fits especially well where a small team needs to move quickly and has no appetite for infrastructure work.
Who should look harder
Businesses whose product cannot be described as a variant. Marketplaces with many independent sellers. Companies whose commerce is a small feature of a much larger application. Shopify can be pushed towards all three, and sometimes that is the right call, but you should go in knowing you are pushing.
The honest version of a platform decision starts with your five most awkward products, not with a feature table.
Standard plans against Plus
Start on a standard plan unless you already know you need checkout control, automation at scale or several storefronts. Plus removes ceilings that most stores have not reached yet, and the upgrade is easy when the time comes. We wrote about where that line sits in our piece on what Shopify Plus actually buys you.
If you are choosing a platform now, the most useful hour you will spend is the one where somebody who builds on it tells you where your catalogue will fight it.
