How To Get Value From Shopify Experts

The Shopify directory tells you someone builds on Shopify. It does not tell you whether they can build yours. Here is how to close that gap.

A team reviewing store performance data together

Search for Shopify experts and you get a directory of several thousand agencies and freelancers, all of whom build on Shopify. The listing is a starting filter, not a verdict. What it confirms is that a partner exists and works on the platform. What it cannot tell you is whether they have solved a problem shaped like yours.

What the Partner programme means

Shopify Partners is open to anyone building on the platform. Shopify Plus Partner is a narrower group, held to volume and quality requirements and reviewed by Shopify. It is a useful signal about the kind of work an agency does day to day. The Epixels has held Shopify Plus Partner status since 2016. It still tells you less than a live store and a client who will take your call.

Brief on the problem, not the solution

The most common way to waste money is to brief a solution. A brief that says build us a product configurator gets you a configurator. A brief that says customers ask us for measurements we cannot show gets you a conversation about whether the answer is a configurator, a better size guide, or a change to the product data. The second brief costs less and is usually right.

  • What the store does today, and where it says no.
  • What customers ask before they buy.
  • What the business has already tried, and what happened.
  • Which systems hold the truth about stock, price and customers.
  • What has to be true for this project to have been worth it.

The engagement models

  • Fixed scope, fixed price. Best when the work can be described completely up front. A migration or a defined build fits here.
  • Retainer. Best when the store changes continuously and the queue never empties. Buys capacity rather than a deliverable.
  • Audit first. Best when nobody is sure what the problem is. A week of investigation costs less than a quarter of the wrong build.

If an agency quotes a full build before it has looked at your theme code, the number is a guess and you will pay for it later.

Red flags

A guaranteed percentage lift. A portfolio of designs with no live URLs. A price given in the first call. An unwillingness to say which parts of the work are apps. And silence: the single most common complaint about agencies is not bad work, it is not knowing what is happening for three weeks at a time.

Ask what the weekly rhythm looks like and who you will actually speak to. The answer tells you how the project will feel long before the code does.

The Epixels is a Shopify Plus agency in Dubai that builds custom Shopify development and runs conversion rate optimization for DTC brands. Bring us the store and the problem.
